The favourite nashta among Indians is tea with paratha. Despite the fact that drinking hot tea with hot fluffy parathas is another worldly sinful delight, tea with parathas can be the worst health mistake. But is it a beneficial habit?
These are three reasons why it’s not a good idea to have tea with meals:
If you drink tea along with a filling meal like laden parathas, you could have extreme bloating and acid reflux. This is due to the fact that eating parathas while consuming tea or coffee is believed to disrupt or upset your stomach’s acid-base balance.
May result in anaemia:
In a study, it was discovered that the phenolic compounds in tea encourage the production of iron-complexes in the stomach lining, which prevents iron absorption. As a result, tea should not be eaten with meals. Especially if the person has anaemia as a result of low iron levels.
Impedes the absorption of nutrients:
The tannins in tea interact with proteins to act as antinutrients by obstructing protein absorption in the body. A study found that tannins cause a 38% average reduction in the rate of protein digestion. Tea may not be the best beverage to mix with the paratha because it stops the body from using nutrients.
How should the tea be consumed?
You might appreciate chai if it’s your cup of tea, but keep these factors in mind. Tea should be had at least 45 minutes after any meal. The ideal time to have a cup of tea is an hour after breakfast or lunch or in the evening while having some snacks.
Nutritionists suggest substituting options like tea without sugar, herbal teas, honey or lemon tea, or just plain warm water first thing in the morning to help you get your day off to a good start. After that, you’re free to slurp from your cup of tea.
