Low pressure is a threat to public health and hurts water quality. A reduction or loss of pressure in a water distribution system can result in backflow. This will allow contaminants to enter drinking water. Backflow is observed when water flows in the wrong direction.

The system maintained pressure

According to Houston Water Director Yvonne Williams Forrest, a boil water notice was issued out of an abundance of caution and to comply with regulatory standards .Forrest told KHOU that their system maintained pressure. They never lost pressure fully . So there was never an opportunity for anything to enter the system. They just fell below the regulatory requirements.

Gov. Greg Abbott directed state emergency resources to the city to help. He said he has been in contact with Mayor Sylvester Turner. Abbott stated that, “We’re currently working to fulfill the city’s request for help with rapid turnaround of water sample results” .
