Rajkumar Santoshi, who has done films like Andaz Apna Apna and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, has been away from films. The director, who last played Shahid Kapoor starrer Phat Poster Nikhla Hero in 2013, hasn’t released in 10 years. After a decade, Santoshi’s next Gandhi Godse: Ek Yudh is about to release.
About his time off, the filmmaker says:
I was not satisfied with the films that were being made. The market dictated creativity ko yeh chahiye woh chahiye. Then most of the stars wanted scripts written around them. Aare, banti hai blockbusters thanks to a joint team effort, well. Today, all the stars are briefed on what to do, when to do (their teams). This was not the case with earlier stars like Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Raj Kapoor or Dilip Kumar. They had their charisma. Kaunsa director unhe batayegi ki yeh cheez aisi karo? Dev Anand’s charisma is his asset (to his film).
Meanwhile, Santoshi was working on a film but was devastated when someone else made a film on a similar theme. “I was planning the battle of Saragarhi (Randeep Hooda starrer). I shot for 20 days but no one was interested in me, aur kisi ne Kesari (Akshay Kumar starrer) bana daali. Toh phir meri movie ruk gayi.”
This time, Santoshi, who is known to make commercial kettles, has ventured into the making of a political drama. The film shows how Mahatma Gandhi survived the attack and met Nathuram Godse in jail. Talking about the film, Santoshi says, “Humne dono ko mauka diya hai aamne-saamne aake ek conversation karne ka. Tumne goli maari toh kyu maari? I wrote the dialogues, but I only used these words… regardless of what Godse delivered in court.

Rajkumar Santoshi quip that he will tell the film only if Gandhi Ghodse Ek Yudh enhances a hit.
He therefore additional, “I be going to produce words the fans of Andaz Apna Apna to support all my films. I won’t predict a follow-up but we are preparation another part in the alike right (of sorts) named Ada Apni Apni. It will feature two young stars and actresses, like Andaz Apna Apna. The work is previously started.”
