Dr Jyoti Bhaskar, Additional Director, Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Patparganj and Noida, is telling us about this problem related to women.

What is Urinary Incontinence?

In this problem, there is no control over the urine and a few drops of urine suddenly come out. There are two types of urinary incontinence. First, it removes urine from pressure on the pelvic area while laughing, sneezing, coughing or walking. This is called stress incontinence.

The second application is incontinence. In old age, the muscles of the bladder and kidneys become so weak that they are unable to withstand the pressure of urine even for a while and urine is released before reaching the toilet. This is called arj incontinence. Some women show signs of stress incontinence and some have signs of arbitrage. But some show both types of symptoms.

Why does urinary incontinence occur?

Expert says, “During pregnancy, a hormone called progesterone starts increasing. It relaxes the muscles of both the uterus and the bladder. This causes tension in the necessary muscles. However, during normal delivery, when the baby exits through the vaginal canal, all the muscles of the pelvic are stretched and only then the vagina is also stretched. The effect of both hormones and stretches leads to urinary incontinence. This problem occurs a few days or a few weeks after delivery. ”

Treatment for Urinary Incontinence

Immediately after delivery, the woman should do pelvic floor or kegel exercise. After delivery, women are trained in this exercise by a physiotherapist before being discharged from the hospital. These exercises should be done daily. They strengthen the muscles of the perineum and help to overcome the problem of urinary incontinence over time.

Simple lifestyle changes help treat urinary incontinence. This includes losing weight after delivery, eating more fiber-rich foods, drinking more water and avoiding lifting heavy weights, etc.

In pregnancy, the baby grows and puts pressure on your bladder, which is why you have a desire to urinate again and again. However, after the birth of the baby, you should train the bladder to stop urinating.

If none of these treatments work for the new mother, it is said to take medications to treat urinary incontinence. Medicines are needed especially for stress incontinence.

Taking physiotherapy during pregnancy helps women strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor, which helps prevent urinary incontinence after delivery. However, during pregnancy, women should avoid lifting heavy weights and doing fast exercises.

The problem of urinary incontinence is cured in a few weeks. If this does not happen and the problem does not go away even after two-three months of delivery, contact the doctor immediately.
