Ponniyin Selvan II, directed by Mani Ratnam, has had a strong start at the box office internationally. As a result of its opening day revenue of Rs 62.31 crores, the movie has officially had the highest Tamil opening of the year. Thunivu, with Rs 42 crores, and Varisu, with Rs 46.5 crores, have taken second and third place among Tamil movies, respectively. Based on its second day hold, Ponniyin Selvan II most likely will surpass all other Tamil films this year in terms of box office earnings.
Ponniyin Selvan II Took A Greater Opening Than Varisu And Thunivu Worldwide.
Both Varisu and Thunivu were commercial successes, with the Thalapathy Vijay-starring movie earning over Rs 300 crores and the Ajith Kumar-starring movie earning just over Rs 190 crores globally. It is interesting to note that on the first day in Tamil Nadu, Varisu and Thunivu, despite being at odds, outperformed PS II in terms of business. While PSII only made a little over 16 crores in the state, Varisu and Thunivu both made over and around 20 crores. It is safe to say that Ponniyin Selvan II’s business has been driven by its international numbers, as opposed to Varisu and Thunivu, for whom the reverse was true.
Ponniyin Selvan II Is The Sixth Biggest Tamil Opener Of All Time
Thankfully, PS II has received better reviews than its predecessor. The first day of PSII is expect to gross just over Rs 62 crores, which is less than its predecessor’s first day gross of about Rs 80 crores. Following 2.0, Kabali, and Beast, the first part was rank as the fourth-biggest Tamil opening of all time, and the second part came in at number six. Positive reviews are hope to bridge the gap between the first and second parts. The movie appears to be on track to surpass the third or fourth-highest Tamil grossing films of all time, but only time will tell what the final numbers are.
