Madhuri Dixit’s fan sends legal notice to Netflix over an episode of the Big Bang Theory
According to reports, Jim Parsons, who plays Sheldon Cooper, compares Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri in the first episode of the second season of The Big Bang Theory. Aishwarya Rai is a goddess, in contrast, Madhuri Dixit is a leprous prostitute, responds the other character, Raj Koothrapalli, played by Kunal Nayyar.
Mithun Vijay Kumar claims in his legal notice that the characters’ remarks are both offensive and defamatory. “It is important to hold companies like Netflix accountable for their actions and to ensure that they are mindful of the cultural values and sentiments of the communities they serve,” he said in his statement. I firmly believe that the content that streaming service providers offer on their platforms should be carefully curated. They have a responsibility to make sure that the content they present does not contain anything offensive, derogatory, or defamatory. The use of a derogatory term in the Netflix programme Big Bang Theory caused me great distress.
He further added, “I strongly believe that streaming service providers must take such issues seriously and act quickly to address any instances of offensive or defamatory content. Additionally, streaming service providers ought to take proactive measures to stop the streaming of such content. This can be achieved through clear guidelines and rigorous screening processes for all the content published. In the end, streaming services have a big say in what millions of people watch, and with that power comes a duty to make sure that the content they provide is respectful, inclusive, and devoid of damaging stereotypes. This incident, I hope, will act as a wake-up call for all streaming service providers to work towards establishing a more just and respectful media environment.”
