Salaam Venky: boring first half and insipid script fails to impress

Salaam Venky is about a man’s right to die. Venkatesh Krishnan aka Venky (Vishal Jethwa) is 24 years old and has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a degenerative disease in which the muscles gradually stop working as one ages. Venky can no longer walk and is confined to a wheelchair.

What Venky’s mother do?

Sujata (Kajol), Venky’s mother, is a single parent who has raised him on her own. He was at home when his condition deteriorated rapidly. He’s rushed to the hospital, where Dr. Shekhar (Rajeev Khandelwal), who’s been treating him for years, realises Venky’s time is running out. Even Venky is aware of it, and he requests that her mother grant his last wish. He wishes to be euthanized and then have his organs donated to those in need. If he dies naturally, some of his organs will be worthless to donate. He does not want a situation like this to occur.

Sujata obviously opposes his plan because, as a mother, she cannot agree to it. Sujata, on the other hand, quickly sees the value in Venky’s suggestion. She agrees and decides to seek mercy killing for her child in court. However, euthanasia is illegal in India and can result in a lengthy court battle. The rest of the movie revolves around what happens next.

Revathy’s direction is mediocre.

Revathy’s handles some scenes with aplomb, such as Venky’s breakdown and Sujata revealing that she is the only mother who wakes up her child in the middle of the night, among others. The romantic track is adorable. A few courtroom scenes are also noteworthy.

On the other hand, the story stagnates in the first half. Venky’s death jokes become tiresome. The intermission is boring, and it’s not surprising that moviegoers begin to leave the theatres at this point. Only in the second half is there any movement and the introduction of some intriguing characters.

Even so, the problems persist. Sujata’s backstory is unconvincing. Viewers never learn what Sujata does for a living or how she pays her hospital bills. Finally, the character of Aamir Khan will be perplexing to viewers because the director fails to explain him.
