Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, supported Lionel Messi for the 2023 Laureus Sportsman of the Year award, claiming that the 2022 FIFA World Cup champion “deserves” the honour.
The nominees for various awards were announced by Laureus, and the list includes some of the greatest athletes in history in addition to those who shone in the previous 12 months. Athletes who have been nominated include Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe, Iga Swiatek, Tiger Woods, and Mikaela Shiffrin.

Lionel Messi (football, Argentina), Kylian Mbappe (football, France), Rafael Nadal (tennis, Spain), Max Verstappen (motor racing, Netherlands), Mondo Duplantis (athletics, Sweden), and Steph Curr (basketball, USA) have all been named finalists for the 2023 Laureus Sportsman of the Year award.
The nominees for the 2023 Laureus Sportswoman of the Year award include Iga Swiatek (tennis, Poland), Alexia Putellas (football, Spain), Katie Ledecky (swimming, USA), Mikaela Shiffrin (alpine skiing, USA), Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone (athletics, USA), and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (athletics, Jamaica).
