Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway: The Norway child welfare services had forcefully taken custody of two child

The Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway trailer, which was published on Thursday. It has renewed interest in a case that an Indian couple battled in Norway ten years ago to regain custody of their two children. Norway’s severe child-rearing laws surprised the entire globe when the country’s child welfare agency took custody of Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya’s two children. Also, it caused a diplomatic dispute between Norway and India.

Sagarika Bhattacharya’s arduous voyage will soon be captured on film in Ashima Chibber’s Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway. The movie marks Bengali actor Anirban Bhattacharya’s Bollywood debut and stars Rani Mukerji in the lead role. Jim Sarbh and Neena Gupta have significant roles in the movie as well.

What Happened With Mr and Mrs Bhattacharya?

In 2007, Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya relocated to Norway. A boy named Avigyan was born to them in the following year. And a baby girl named Aishwarya was born in 2010. Avigyan was admitted to a family kindergarten close to the family’s house after apparently displaying “autism-like” signs in his early years.

The couple’s children were apparently taken from them in May 2011 under the guise of poor parenting after the family reportedly came under the child protection service’s surveillance for months. They objected to Sagarika feeding the child by hand and compared it to force-feeding. Also, they experienced issues with children sharing a bed with their parents. Which is a practise that is widespread in Indian households.

About the child welfare services in Norway

The group, known as Barnevernet in Norway, is the government agency in charge of looking out for children. In terms of child safety, the organisation is quite severe and imposes strict rules on all residents of the nation. Regardless of their cultural background.

The Diplomatic row between India and Norway

The Bhattacharyas had made a request for the foreign ministry to get involve. India’s government harshly denounced the Norwegian Child Welfare Service for separating children from their parents. Human Rights Alert’s Norwegian director, Berit Aarset, referred to the occurrence as “state kidnapping.” This is not the first time something similar has occurred in Norway, the speaker claimed, “the legal system favours the Child Welfare Services and they do what they want all the time… quite often when a Norwegian is married to a non-Norwegian they also do the same thing; they also do this to asylum seekers and in almost every case they say one of the parents has a mental problem just to make their case strong… that is what has happened in [this] case too.”
