Dethroned King Richard Petty : hurt as Johnson takes over race team.

The current NASCAR King, Richard Petty, is unhappy with his diminished influence with his former race team since Jimmie Johnson joined as a co-owner in November.

Petty, who shares the record for the most Cup Series victories (seven) with Johnson and Dale Earnhardt, is still getting used to Johnson’s presence at Legacy Motor Club, formerly Petty GMS Motorsports.

Petty, who is now the team’s official ambassador, told The Associated Press, “It’s been strange to me.” “I was in charge of the show most of the time. Jimmie invited every member of his crew. The way he runs things and the way I run things probably differ slightly.

In 2009, Petty Enterprises and Gillett Evernham Motorsports merged, and Richard Petty Motorsports was born. Up until 2021, the team operated under that name before joining forces with GMS Racing to form Petty GMS Motorsports. One of Johnson’s first decisions after acquiring a stake in the team’s ownership was to replace “Petty” with the name Legacy Motor Club.

It was going to be challenging to be Johnson Petty GMS when Jimmie came in, Petty told the AP. Jimmie came up with a new name while planning ahead with his crew.

Since his team’s cars haven’t achieved top-end success in years, Petty, 85, admitted it was “probably time for a change,” but he acknowledged that Johnson’s quick ascent to power does worry him.

Johnson will have more power in the upcoming years, according to Petty.

He will essentially end up running the show in four or five years, according to Petty. “He’ll likely hold the majority of the shares or run the business himself. They have a totally different perspective on the situation.”

After a two-year stint in IndyCar, Johnson returned to NASCAR in November as a co-owner and part-time driver of the newly renamed Legacy Motor Club.. He expressed his “disappointment” that he had done so in public.

Johnson told the AP, “He hasn’t expressed (his frustrations) to me, for starters. “In all honesty, there are numerous moving parts in this.  I simply don’t have the authority to discuss those specifics.

Johnson, 47, qualified for Sunday’s Daytona 500, but he is nearing the end of his career as a NASCAR driver. He should have a lengthy tenure as a team owner once his racing career is over, as noted by Petty.
