Congress Speaker Nancy Pelosi to step out the U.S. House

Speaker Nancy Pelosi was the one who shattered the “marble ceiling” and become the first woman to lead the U.S. House. Recently, she announced on Thursday that she will step down from party leadership.Pelosi gave a speech in the House floor and said, “With great confidence in our caucus, I will not seek reelection to Democratic leadership in the next Congress. According to Pelosi, she warned that democracy is “majestic, but it is fragile”. She then said that voters in 2022 sent a message to Congress that they would not support those who supported violence.She applauded the chamber for being more diverse over the course of her 35-year career. When she initially entered Congress in 1987, there were only 12 women in the Democratic caucus and now there are 90. This decision of her’s came after Republicans officially won control of the chamber in the 2022 midterms. There’s a desire among Democrats to elect a younger slate of leaders to replace Pelosi, who is 82, and also the two other top House Democratic leaders, Rep Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., who are also running in their 80s. After Pelosi announced her step out, the House Majority Leader,Hoyer, said he will not run for a leadership position in the next Congress.

Pelosi’s announcement will set off a flurry of leadership bid announcements

House Democrats will hold leadership elections at the end of the month. And, at the top of the list is Jeffries of New York, Katherine Clark of Massachusetts and Pete Aguilar of California.

All three leaders serve in a lower-tier leadership roles and are now interested in moving up the ladder. Jeffries, 52; Clark, 59 and Aguilar, 43, would make new faces of the party with an African American, a white woman and a Hispanic . Also, adding to the list, Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., is also mulling a leadership bid. For the 2024 election, fellow Californians Ami Bera and Tony Cárdenas have already announced campaigns to run the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the Democrats’ campaign arm.
