ChatGPT bursts into Microsoft Bing as Google Bard rises.

Google and Microsoft both announced this week that they would add conversational AI functionality to their search products in response to the growing popularity of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot. Google yesterday introduced Bard, a chatbot AI project that has been in the works for some time.
Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) will power Bard, an experimental conversational AI service for Google Search, which will enable the public to use it soon. To deliver high-quality responses, Bard will “combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models,” just as ChatGPT does.
A simplified version of the LaMDA AI will be included in Bard, and according to Google, it will scale well because it uses little processing power. With Google planning to make updates and improvements over time, Bard’s initial launch will be in a testing capacity. It will soon begin to roll out on Google Search.

Microsoft held an event today where it revealed plans to integrate conversational AI tools into the Edge browser and the Bing search engine, following Google’s Bard announcement. Microsoft collaborated with OpenAI on the project and integrated a more advanced version of the AI technology that underpins ChatGPT into Bing and Edge.

“AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Bing enables complex searches that can be useful for tasks like creating a travel itinerary or doing research before purchasing a television. According to Microsoft, users can hone their searches by requesting more information, clarity, and ideas. Additionally, Bing is capable of carrying out creative tasks like email writing, making a trivia night quiz, preparing for an interview, and more.

Additionally available is the new Microsoft Edge browser with enhanced AI features. Edge has the ability to do things like summarise reports and provide key information, compare businesses and their offerings, and compose content when given a prompt. With instruction, it can take into account tone, format, and length.

According to Microsoft, its new OpenAI model is more potent than ChatGPT.

A limited preview version of the updated Bing search engine with ChatGPT integration is now accessible. On the Bing website, users can test out sample queries and sign up for the waitlist. In the upcoming weeks, Microsoft intends to scale the preview to millions of users, and a mobile experience will soon be in preview.

Given that both Google and Microsoft are releasing conversational AI products, it’s possible that Apple has plans to eventually add similar features to the Safari browser. The Bing and Google search engines, which can be accessed through the Safari browser, will initially offer AI chatbot functionality.
