Avatar: The Way of Water, a film by James Cameron, will be released on December 16, 2022. The expensive and highly anticipated sequel debuted below expectations. Grossing $134 million in the United States and Canada but performed well in other countries. Cameron’s film would need to be “the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history” to break even.
According to THR, Disney and 20th Century Fox’s Avatar 2 grossed $57.1 million in China over the weekend.
The increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Beijing and other major Chinese cities is affecting the film’s box office collections in China.
However, the film performed well in a number of other countries. Avatar: The Way of Water crossed ₹100-crore benchmark in the net collection in India on Sunday. Other top-five markets include South Korea ($24.7 million), France ($19.3 million), and Germany ($19.9 million), all of which saw their best openings since the pandemic began.
According to the distributor Walt Disney Co., Avatar 2 added $301 million in overseas markets, bringing the global total to around $435 million as of Sunday. The film was the tenth highest-grossing film of 2022, and it received positive reviews from critics, who praised its visual effects and technical achievement while criticising its thin narrative and lengthy runtime.
