A video of music composer AR Rahman asking his wife to speak in Tamil while stopping her from speaking English at an award function has gone viral on social media. In fact, Rahman was recently awarded the Anand Vikatan Cinema Award. Where he called his wife Saira Banu on stage, asked her to take the trophy together and say a few words.
AR Rahman thanked his wife for the award and she got emotional after hearing this. Ar Rahman asked if she would like to join him, after which she came on stage and hugged Rahman. When Rahman asked her to say a few words, she started speaking in English. “Speak in Tamil, not in English. ”
AR Rahman said this while joking with his wife. Saira hesitated and said in English, “I can’t speak Tamil very well so forgive me. I am very happy and excited because I like his voice very much. I love his voice, that’s all I can say. ”
AR Rahman has worked in all languages. He worked the magic of his music in many industries including Hindi, South. Tamil had favoured the Tamil language only last year. When Union Home Minister Amit Shah had said that people of different states should communicate with each other in Hindi and not in English. Rahman had then shared an example of “Thamizhanangu” from “Goddess Tamil”.
AR Rahman and Saira got married in 1995. Both were marrie d by their mother. Rahman had mentioned this in Simi Garewal’s show years ago. “To be honest, I didn’t have time to go and look for my wife. I was doing films and at that time Rangeela was busy with Bombay. But I knew it was the right time to get marrie d. I was 29 and I told my mother ‘find a bride for me’. ”
