The northeastern Indian state of Assam is home to a variety of cultures, beautiful scenery, and wildlife. The state has become well-known for its Brahmaputra River, wildlife sanctuaries, and tea plantations. There are, however, a number of lesser-known tourist attractions in Assam that are just as breathtaking and merit exploring.
The following are five such Destinations that are worthwhile visits:
Mainland Majuli:
The Brahmaputra river contains Majuli, the largest river island in the world. With numerous monasteries, temples, and traditional crafts, the island serves as a focal point for Assamese culture and traditions. Visitors can also take in the annual Majuli festival, which takes place in November.
Haflong:
Located in the Dima Hasao district, Haflong is the only hill station in Assam. Rolling hills, lush forests, and lakes encircle the town. The area has unrivalled natural beauty and is also home to numerous tribes with distinctive cultures and traditions.
Manas National Park:
On the Bhutan border, Manas National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Several threatened species, including the Bengal tiger, one-horned rhinoceros, and elephants, can be found in the park. The Bodo culture and traditions are also visible to visitors in the nearby villages.
Sualkuchi:
A small town on the Brahmaputra River, Sualkuchi is well known for its silk weaving industry. Visitors can watch the intricate process of silk weaving firsthand and buy finished products from the weavers in this town, which is also referred to as the “Manchester of the East.”
Digboi:
The oldest oil refinery in Asia is in the small town of Digboi, which is part of the Tinsukia district. Visitors can see how oil is extracted while learning about the town’s history.
